Pronunciation: NKEKAE
At the end of this lesson, we should be able to
• Identify and pronounce what sounds each
alphabetical unit in a word makes.
• Differentiate between different sounds
despite similar spellings.
/a/ and /ã/
These sounds are produced by the letter “A a”.
E.g. Akwaaba welcome
Nsa arm/hand
Nsã beverage
Kwan way/route
Kwãn row (a boat)
Mpa mattress
Mpadua bed
NB: Written Fante does not normally use the
letter /ã/ in spelling. Therefore, some words
may have the same spelling but slightly
different intonations.. In such instances, a
learner may have to decode the meaning of the
written text based on context.
E.g. “Kwan” could stand for “way” or “to row a
boat”. The accompanying text will inform
readers of the assigned meaning to the word.
/dw/
This sound is produced by the letters “d” and
“w”.
English equivalents would be the “j” in “jeans”
E.g. Dwen think
Edwow yams
/dz/

“z”.
English equivalents would be the “z” in “adze”
E.g. Adze thing
Dadzem achete

/gy/ is similar to the “g” in “gin” or the “j” in "jeans".

Ogya fire

E.g. Kɛtɛ mat
