Fante shares the same alphabets with the other Akan dialects (Asante Twi and Akuapem Twi). There are twenty-three alphabets in all.

SOUNDS


Fantse has thirty-two phonetic units. This comprises of seven vowels (a, ã, e, Ɛ, i, o, ɔ, and u).

There are also eight 8 digraphs (dw, dz, gy, hw, ky, ts, tw, nw and ny)

The remainder are all consonant units.

  RESPONSE TO GREETINGS In Fante, how you respond to greetings depends on: Your relation to the person who has greeted you The title of the person who has greeted you The appellation of the father of the person who has greeted you. These responses do not apply when the greeting is a season’s greeting, a wish or a congratulatory salutation, as they have their own distinct responses  TAP ON EACH IMAGE FOR A CLEAR VIEW  Appellations are chosen by your father. Fathers usually choose appellations based on if they’re royalty, they are wealthy, or what roles they played or play in society. A person will let you know of what appellation they respond to, to guide you in giving them a befitting response. Eg: Greetings: Mema wo akye o, wɔgyem' ahenwa! Response: Ya'ahenewa! Take note that apart from royalty, the elderly and other individuals who fit under formal classifications, you can always respond to a greeting by just saying “yaa”.
